Why are Ransomware Crimes increasing?
Ransomware is not a pandemic, but rather a scheme for criminals to get a quick and easy payout.
From the viewpoint of the increasing Ransomware crime rate as such, the fact that these criminals can remain anonymous so easily is at the root of it (Bitcoin, etc.), and of course, it's currently getting a lot of attention which helps the spread.
Also, I suspect that the fact that they are decoupled and so-to-speak "not close to the crime scene" makes it harder for them to comprehend the actual damage they cause - that lives can hang in the balance when it comes to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, health care systems, manufacturing systems, etc.
These criminals will always look for the easiest way in, and they will find a vulnerability to exploit somewhere along the chain - the Utopia is naturally that any company's Cybersecurity Maturity constantly is at a level that can deal with these types of attacks, with proper (well communicated, tested, validated, periodically reviewed, and understood) incident response plans.
Unfortunately, the current state of affairs is that there are companies that find themselves paying ransoms because they don't have an alternative.
Every modern company, institution, agency, etc. today needs to take Cybersecurity seriously, allocate a serious budget with full senior management support, and act on it before it's too late.
This is well overdue - in my opinion, companies should primarily be evaluated on their Cybersecurity Posture!
